The NGO implements, among other things, the “Meeting” project (hereinafter – the project) – a unique project of joint leisure activities for children with and without disabilities. The project forms groups in an unusual way, imitating groups of friends of different ages and creating an atmosphere of belonging and empowerment. In these groups, children are accepted for who they are and can feel safe enough to express themselves and feel comfort and a sense of belonging. This allows children to grow and develop, and the group itself develops along with their personal development.
The main goal of the project is to enable the children and young people involved to define and realize their own goals. Participants are given full freedom and responsibility to ensure that the content, format and timing of activities meet the expectations and needs of each group member.
The Association attaches great importance to creating the space in which the group operates in such a way that it promotes the individual development of each child according to his or her characteristics. The dynamic adaptation of the environment to children’s specificities, while at the same time creating a space in which they are accepted and welcomed, allows group participants to discover themselves in new ways. In addition, the realization of their ability to influence the space of which they are a part creates a strengthening experience that then accompanies them in other areas of life.
Children in the group learn how they can express themselves and have influence. They can also apply the skills they have learned in other environments. Group members will learn how to make collective decisions, express themselves without fear, develop both individually and collectively, and learn many other skills that will prepare them for a fulfilling independent life – without dependence on a particular characteristic. After several years of participation in the project, children leave the project happier, with a positive experience of belonging and more optimistic about their future.
The project started in 2017, financed by donations and small support from local authorities, and has proven to be effective. Therefore, from 2019, the association started to receive support for the project from the Ministry of Social Affairs and Social Equality in accordance with the funding criteria, and is still receiving it.
Representatives of the social protection authorities – ministry staff, inspectors and representatives of municipal social departments – who visit the venues from time to time were deeply impressed by the professional level of the project and its contribution to the well-being of the participants and the promotion of the goals of state support.
Given the high level of the program and its significant contribution to the development of participants, it is not surprising that the project has expanded considerably and there are now long waiting lists for participation. The project has also expanded in terms of opportunities – it now offers a wide range of diverse and interesting activities, including a summer camp abroad.
